Samsung Chromebook Plus now supports Linux apps in Dev channel

There has been a lot of exciting stuff happening in the world of Chrome OS, but the most exciting development might be Linux apps. Chrome OS started as a simple web-based "OS," but the addition of the Play Store, and now Linux apps, has made it a respectable operation system (no air quotes required). The Samsung Chromebook Plus now supports Linux apps on the Dev channel.

Linux Apps on Chrome OS

If you haven't been following the news, Linux app support on Chrome OS is being called "Crostini" internally by Google. These Linux apps can be started from the launcher just like regular apps. They run in windows that can be dragged around the screen like normal. Installing the apps works the same way it would in Linux: apt-get in the command line or tarballs. Linux app support requires the Linux kernel 4.4 and above. Previously, it only worked on the Google Pixelbook in the Dev or Canary channel.

Samsung Chromebook Plus

Reddit user bdovpro in the Crostini subreddit was able to get Linux apps up and running on the Chromebook Plus. If you are interested in giving this a try, you can find a tutorial in the thread linked below. You will need to be on the Dev channel to use Linux apps. Other users in the subreddit have shared screenshots of Linux apps running in Chrome OS. Someone even got Firefox working.

There has never been a better time to get a Chrome OS device. A lot of exciting things are happening on the platform. Even if you don't want to shell out close to $1,000 for the Pixelbook, there are plenty of great high-end Chromebooks to choose from. They all support Android apps and many will eventually get Linux app support as well.

ASUS ROG Phone forums are now open

With the ASUS ROG Phone announced earlier today, we've decided to open up forums for the device. In a world where competitors like the Razer Phone and the Xiaomi Black Shark exist, the ASUS ROG Phone is going to need as much help as it can get to take off and grow. Oftentimes the development community is what propels a phone into the spotlight, and so we've opened up the forums for this device so that not only can you discuss it, but future developers can release their work for the device. So long as the bootloader can be unlocked and kernel sources are released, of course.

If you want to visit the forums, simply check out the link below. Devices like this are designed with enthusiasts in mind, so we expect users to do a lot of tinkering. It appears to be a great device with absolutely no stone unturned when it comes to getting maximum performance, so we're sure once it releases that developers will have a great time with it.

Android Security updates for June are Now Available with OTA and Factory Images

The calendar has flipped to June, which means it's time for Google to release a new Android Security Bulletin. Like clockwork, Google releases these bulletins on the first Monday of every month. The security bulletin comes along with OTA and factory images for the latest security patches. Pixel and Nexus devices can get the latest patches up and running right now.

The files are available for the Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 2, Pixel XL, Pixel, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Pixel C. Download the OTA files and factory images from the links below.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 may have triple rear cameras like the Huawei P20 Pro

It can take a long time for a smartphone OEM to complete the development process of an upcoming device. This is especially true with their flagship phones as they need to make sure that even the smallest details are worked out. This results in some reports revealing information about a device that isn't even going to be released until the next year. That is what we've seen lately with the Galaxy S10. A new report from "market analysts" says Samsung will be outfitting the upcoming Galaxy S10 with three cameras, similar to what Huawei did with the P20 Pro.

Samsung has likely spent well over 12 months developing and designing their upcoming flagship smartphone for the Galaxy S series. Rumors say that Samsung may not even call the device the Galaxy S10. Instead, they could switch over to a new naming scheme as the Galaxy X (with X standing for 10). As with most plans for an unreleased smartphone though, these details could change multiple times before the phone is released, so we'll need to wait until we hear something more official from Samsung to be sure.

This is why the Galaxy S10 could end up missing out on the in-display fingerprint sensor yet again, even though current rumors suggest it will have one (along with the Galaxy Note 9). The small camera sensors we have in our smartphones are only capable of doing so much. This level of photo quality has improved to some impressive levels these last few years, but OEMs are constantly looking for ways to outdo the competition. Since these small sensors are only capable of doing so much, OEMs have resorted to including multiple sensors. Huawei decided to put three cameras on the back of the P20 Pro and Samsung may be doing the same for the upcoming 2019 flagship smartphone.

The report also says the phone will come equipped with a 3D sensor, which, if true, will likely sit on the front of the phone and improve the accuracy of Samsung's facial unlock feature.

The ASUS ROG Phone is a gaming phone with an overclocked Snapdragon 845 and a 90Hz screen

Gaming phones appear to be all the rage recently with the Razer Phone kicking everything off late last year. Following that, the Xiaomi-backed Black Shark made an appearance. ASUS is now getting in on the action with the ASUS ROG Phone (Republic of Gamers) making its way to the market. It's got a number of tricks up its sleeve that ASUS hopes will push it ahead of the competition.

Performance

As a gaming phone, the ASUS ROG Phone aims to not only provide the best performance possible but also future proof as much as possible. With the ever-changing landscape of mobile phone technology, companies are putting more and more power into their mobile phones in order to be able to compete in the future. This is ensured by (what ASUS claims to be) the highest binned Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip available today clocked at 2.96GHz. The normal Snapdragon 845 is clocked at 2.8GHz. With this chip comes the Adreno 630, currently the best mobile GPU around. In terms of RAM and storage, there are two options. Both models have 8GB of RAM, but you can get 128GB or 512GB of storage – a lot no matter which you choose. If you're worried about thermal throttling, ASUS has taken steps to ensure that won't be happening by including vapor-chamber cooling and copper heat spreading to dissipate heat quicker than most phones. The company claims that you'll be able to maintain top speeds 50% longer than most standard cooling systems, along with maintaining peak speeds for 5 times as long.

Display

While the phone is certainly equipped for high-end gaming, the visuals are also important. You get a 2160×1080 6-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 90Hz. It's a bit odd, as most phone displays either come in at 60Hz or 120Hz (like the Razer Phone). ASUS claims that the display has a response time of 1ms and supports HDR visuals. The lower resolution may be annoying for some, but it's likely in order to squeeze as much performance out of the device as possible. Higher refresh rates at a higher resolution may require more computational power than even the Adreno 630 can provide. This does mean you likely won't be using the phone for virtual reality gaming though. They also boast a %108.6 DCI-P3 color gamut for vivid colors. With dual front-facing speakers, this device promises an excellent multimedia experience.

Battery

In terms of battery, ASUS has packed a massive 4,000 mAh battery into this device. What's interesting to note is that ASUS is using their own proprietary charging method, dubbed "ASUS HyperCharge." As far as we can tell, it boasts similarities to OnePlus' Dash Charge as the company claims it can keep the phone cool while charging quickly with the bundled ROG Phone power adapter. It can apparently charge up to 20W.

Connectivity

While ASUS has paid a lot of attention to the common areas of complaints of mobile phones, they've also paid a lot of attention to a lot of the areas that commonly aren't complained about. Slow internet connections are a problem for gaming, so the device supports both CAT 16 LTE and 60GHz 802.11ad Wi-Fi.

Ports and Peripherals

While we have internals out-of-the-way, this phone has much, much more to offer on the outside. The ASUS ROG Phone has not one, not two, but three USB-C ports. In case you're worried that's ASUS' answer to not providing a headphone jack, you'll be happy to know that there is also a 3.5mm headphone jack on board. Why are there so many USB-C ports? ASUS has announced a number of peripherals and extensions that will likely utilize all of these ports. They can also be used for high-speed charging, HDMI output, Gigabit LAN, or headphones.

The first module is an AeroActive Cooler, which appears to allow you to cool the device even further if temperatures are a problem in long-term gaming. Other announced modules include the Mobile Desktop Dock and the TwinView Dock. The Mobile Desktop Dock allows you to connect your phone to a 4K UHD monitor, mouse, and keyboard, while also connecting it to a Gigabit LAN and 5.1 channel surround sound. If you'd prefer, the TwinView Dock turns your phone into a dual-screen behemoth with quad speakers, physical trigger buttons for gaming, dual haptic feedback engine, a better cooling system, and a 6,000 mAh extended battery. You can also get a Gamevice controller which turns your phone into a portable console, so there's plenty of options here.

While we don't know how much the device costs, it's not expected to be cheap like the competition. With an overclocked processor, extreme cooling capabilities, and an excellent display, it's expected to cost a fair amount. Still, ASUS has got a lot right here with the ASUS ROG Phone, and it may certainly give competitors a run for the best gaming phone of 2018.

Some Amazon Prime exclusive Moto G5 Plus owners are getting bootloader unlock codes

Amazon Prime subscribers get a number of benefits that are simply off-limits to those who choose to not subscribe to the service. This includes access to services like Amazon Music, free 2-day shipping on select items, and more. One such benefit is the ability to get a discount on Amazon Prime Exclusive smartphones. The program offers an assortment of devices from a number of OEMs, including Motorola, LG, Nokia, and others. For the most part, these devices have had locked down bootloaders, but we're now seeing reports from multiple Moto G5 Plus owners who are able to get an official unlock code directly from Motorola's website.

I say "for the most part" because there have been a few instances where these Amazon Prime Exclusive devices were able to have the bootloader unlocked. These devices that slipped through the cracks were far and few between, but since the program's inception we have seen a few of these reports. This was rare and happened much less than the recent wave of reports that we have seen throughout the Android community this month from Moto G5 Plus owners. Since Motorola nor Amazon have come out with an official statement on the matter it is unclear if this change is accidental or intended.

We are, however, seeing multiple reports over the last week so it seems as if the change may be widespread at this time. If it is a mistake, then we could see Motorola issue a fix to their bootloader unlock request backend, but for now it seems to be open-ended. We do want to point out that requesting a bootloader unlock code from Motorola will void the warranty of your Moto G5 Plus and the process of unlocking the bootloader will wipe all of the data from the phone (so backup as much stuff as possible before you proceed).

Facebook accused of sharing your personal data with OEMs

A report from The New York Times has accused Facebook of sharing your personal data with OEMs such as Apple, Amazon, BlackBerry, Microsoft, and Samsung. The data has allegedly been shared over the past decade.

When Facebook first started out, the company made at least 60 deals with device OEMs to preload the application on their devices. While that may not be a problem, they also provided private APIs which allowed OEMs to incorporate the site's functionality into the operating system itself. This includes address book integration, photo sharing, and more. The problem lies in the level of access granted to these private APIs, which raises concerns over the amount of data shared with these third-parties. The company claims that these private APIs were "tightly controlled" in a statement posted on the Facebook newsroom.

"Given that these APIs enabled other companies to recreate the Facebook experience, we controlled them tightly from the get-go. These partners signed agreements that prevented people's Facebook information from being used for any other purpose than to recreate Facebook-like experiences. Partners could not integrate the user's Facebook features with their devices without the user's permission. And our partnership and engineering teams approved the Facebook experiences these companies built."

The New York Times reports that when using a Blackberry Z10 and logging into the Facebook Hub app, they were able to retrieve detailed data on 556 friends of the owner of the device. This included their relationship status, religious and political opinions, and upcoming events they had marked themselves as attending. Furthermore, the app was able to uniquely identify another 294,258 people. This level of access was apparently pulled back from third-parties in 2015, though the company apparently does not consider Blackberry a third-party in this case. They continued to share data with device OEMs even when third-party data sharing was disabled, though still has noted that users could consent (or not) to share their data.

Sandy Parakilas, who worked at the company in 2012 and led third-party advertising and privacy compliance for the platform, also spoke to The New York Times. "This was flagged internally as a privacy issue," Parakilas said, "It is shocking that this practice may still continue six years later, and it appears to contradict Facebook's testimony to Congress that all friend permissions were disabled."

The social media giant says that they have ended 22 of these deals and are working to wind down more of them due to a decreased reliance on these private APIs.
